Quick recap of Day 6 – we went camping at Damoy Point, Antarctica!  We left off where we finished setting up camp.  We had amazing views from that spot until the ice/sleet/rain kicked into high gear.  High gear = 40+ mph winds with gusts up to who knows what.  The tents we used are supposedly one of the top hiking tent manufacturers and we can see why.  We weren’t freezing at all!  Did it get cold during the night?  Absolutely, but one should expect that when in Antarctica.

Midnight started quiet time, giving people chance to rest without noisy neighbor sounds.  Wake-up “call” was at 5 am so that we could take the Zodiac back to the ship.  The staff had nice small breakfast for us, which was good since the main restaurant hadn’t opened yet.  A quick bite to eat, and then we headed to our cabin for actual sleep on a nice surface.

Having snow-shoed/walked/camped at Damoy Point (btw…that’s within the Arctic Circle) on Day 6, we were a bit tuckered and ended up sleeping for most of the morning.

The next scheduled visit was Brown Station, and we heavily contemplated on whether we would do that landing or not.  As we were sitting in our cabin discussing pro’s and con’s (seriously…..who would travel all this way and NOT go ashore every chance possible) an announcement was made that the hand-shoveled stairs were steep and the trail was slick, and that made our decision to not go a little easier.

Here are some photos of Brown Station from the ship:

A good bit of the day was spent playing cards and relaxing and getting ready for tomorrow and Deception Island.

Till then…
